Igor Potievsky, CEO of the strategic internet agency Mediahead, shares insights on the effectiveness of email marketing, its challenges, and the most efficient techniques for crafting messages in this exclusive interview for Marketing and Advertising.
1. Could you share your understanding of this area of internet marketing? What do you believe makes it unique?
Email marketing is one of the earliest forms of online advertising. Its goal is to inform clients about relevant services or products through personalized emails. Today, several key criteria define effective email marketing:
- Relevance of the client base: Was the database built in-house or purchased from third parties?
- Segmentation of the database: Grouping by target audiences and attributes to enable personalized emails.
- Creativity and copywriting: Visuals and text length must grab users’ attention and “hook” them.
- Timing: Ensuring the content is timely, and the frequency is appropriate.
- Bonus criterion: Eliciting a response, such as a purchase or a reply.
When each of these criteria is carefully addressed, it becomes possible to engage recipients and enhance marketing performance.
2. Despite frequent and persistent criticism, email marketing remains the “king of ROI.” Why is it one of the most effective communication tools today?
Criticism is inevitable and applies to everything. However, such arguments are often unconstructive. It’s essential to dive deeper into the specifics of the matter. Email marketing is a strategic component of a broader marketing strategy.
Acquiring new customers in today’s highly competitive environment is challenging. However, once you’ve established a relationship and gathered contact information, you have the opportunity to make repeat sales at minimal cost. This is the core reason email marketing remains so effective.
The most challenging aspect of email marketing is creating a high-quality customer database. With an organized and detailed server of your clients, constantly updated by managers and integrated with sales and analytics, you can build a robust foundation for sustained success.
3. One of the most pressing challenges for email marketing is its association with spam. How can companies obtain voluntary consent from recipients and build a stable customer base?
This issue is no longer as relevant. The real challenge today is standing out amidst the vast amount of spam. As an active internet user, you might be subscribed to 20 – 40 newsletters from various online stores and services. The task for businesses is to deliver a message that resonates with you, at a time when you’re most receptive to it.
Instead of focusing solely on obtaining consent, businesses should ask themselves, “What value can we offer users in exchange for their contact information?”. The answer will vary for each business. Find that value, and you’ll naturally build a quality database.
Here’s how to grow your database step by step:
- Purchased a client database? Analyze its contents and conduct a test campaign on a small segment before scaling up.
- Selling products? Collect every contact detail possible.
- Conducted a campaign? Analyze responses, track interactions, and identify reasons for user engagement (you can always call and ask).
- Progress incrementally: Avoid trying to build everything at once.
4. What are the most effective techniques for crafting email messages? Does creativity play a unique role in this format?
It’s impossible to distill all the experience, knowledge, and approaches into a single paragraph. If it were easy, everyone would succeed effortlessly. The key is to understand your target audience. If you can create several audience profiles, tailor a unique message and creative approach for each, ensuring maximum personalization.
5. Can you provide examples of successful email marketing campaigns by companies, both Ukrainian and international?
Major online retailers like Amazon, AliExpress, and Rozetka excel in email marketing. They meticulously track user activity across their platforms, sales, and broader internet behavior. Based on this data, they craft highly targeted email campaigns.
However, their success didn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of consistent effort, trial, and error. Remember, email marketing is just one small piece of a comprehensive marketing strategy.
